Water Safety Instructor Training Course

Prepare to teach lifesaving swim skills, build confidence in others, and advance your leadership in aquatics with our American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course. This nationally recognized certification trains candidates to teach swim lessons and water safety education to individuals of all ages and abilities.

Through blended learning, candidates complete online coursework and in-person sessions focused on lesson planning, stroke progressions, effective teaching strategies, and water safety. You’ll gain hands-on experience planning and teaching real lessons while learning to deliver the full Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program with confidence and professionalism.

Certification Earned*:

  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
    Certification is valid for 2 years upon successful completion.

Prerequisites for the Water Safety Instructor Training Course:

All instructor candidates must meet the following prerequisites to participate in training:

  • Be at least 16 years old by the last day of the course.
  • Pass the specific Pre-Skills Assessment outlined below:
    1. Swim 25 yards (1 pool lap) of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke
    2. Swim 15 yards of butterfly
    3. Float on back for one minute
    4. Tread water for one minute
  • Pass and complete the Online Blended-Learning Training, which will be sent out approximately two weeks before the training.
