Lifeguarding Instructor training

Become A Certified
American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor!

Interested in becoming a Lifeguarding Instructor?

The American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Instructor Course is designed to train instructor candidates to plan, prepare, and teach the base-level Lifeguard Courses.

What does training look like?

At the Aquatic Training Academy, a member of The Aquatic Connection, we offer American Red Cross blended-learning certification courses which consist of a comprehensive online course and in-person training session.

The online course features 2-hours of instruction that will prepare candidates for what to expected when they attend their in-person training.

Our in-person training provides candidates with the opportunity to polish their lifeguarding skills, learn how to conduct lifeguarding courses, and teach four practice-teaching assignments with their instructor trainer. At the start of our in-person training, candidates are required to demonstrate competency in pre-requisite skills which can be found below. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, candidates will obtain their Lifeguarding Instructor Certification.

How long is the course?

The length of our in-person training is dependent upon our training facility’s schedule.  See our locations for in-person dates and times of training.

Prerequisites for In-Person Training:

  1. Be at least 17 years old by the last day of the course
  2. Hold a current base level ARC Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR/ AED Certification
  3. Successfully complete the online course prior to the first in-person class
  4. Pass a pre-skills assessment:
    1. Two-Rescuer CPR Scenario
    2. Submerged Victim Rescue Scenario

Does my certification expire?

Yes. An American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification is valid for two years.

How do I maintain my Lifeguarding Instructor Certification?

To maintain your certification, Instructors must:

  • Teach or co-teach one lifeguarding course within your certification period
  • Successfully complete an in-person Lifeguarding Instructor Review Course prior to expiration
  • Complete all applicable course updates

The instructors are very kind and knowledgeable in the coursework and in instructing new guards. Throughout the course they provided individual feedback and practice time to ensure all guards knew the proper techniques and were confident in themselves to complete the rescues. Finally, they were able to foster an inclusive working environment that made it comfortable and fun to learn in!
